Explanation: Some peripheral devices and expansion cards contain executable BIOS code stored in a ROM (Read Only Memory). The ROM has a checksum value in it that is used as a double-check by the motherboards  BIOS to ensure that the code has not been corrupted before the motherboard’s BIOS tries to use the device. This error message is generated when the BIOS detects a mismatch between the stored checksum value and the one it calculated at boot time by looking at the peripheral devices ROM code. A four-digit address may be included in the message to indicate the address of the failed peripheral.

Diagnosis: There is a problem with one of the peripheral cards, or possibly the video card or motherboard.

Recommendation:

• Troubleshoot all expansion cards by removing them one at a time to see if the problem persists.
• Troubleshoot the video card by replacing it with a known good one, or by trying the video card in another system.
• If all else fails, troubleshoot the motherboard.
