Windows 2000 Service Pack 2

List of Bugs Fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2
Updated: May 15, 2001

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 SP1 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 SP1 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 SP1 Server

On may 7, 2001, or about a week prior prior to the anticipated official release of Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Conxion servers, at Microsoft’s request, made the 101MB SP2 download available to Microsoft’s Premier customers. This week, Microsoft made Windows 2000 SP2 available on their own servers. This most recent Service Pack is a long awaited collection of bug fixes for Windows 2000 that had been due out almost two months ago. The README enclosed with the Service Pack makes note of the fact that it is a collection of updates that fixes issues in the Windows 2000 operating system, and can be applied to Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and Windows 2000 with Server Appliance Kit.

Note: Normally Service packs are cumulative, in that bugs that are fixed in a an earlier service pack are also fixed in subsequent service packs. This continues with Service Pack 2, as it is a superset of Service Pack 1, therefore you will not need to apply Service Pack 1 before installing Service Pack 2. If you already have Service Pack 1 installed, you will not need to uninstall it before applying Service Pack 2. One of the more important facets of this service pack is that during the installation of process, the encryption level of Windows 2000 is elevated from 56-bit to 128-bit, and a compatibility mode feature similar to the one in Windows XP is added.

Confusion over Service Pack Releases

There also seems to be some confusion over the available releases of this service pack. According to a Windows Magazine Article posted today, the version of Service Pack 2 currently being released cannot be used to upgrade any version of Windows 2000, including those that have been upgraded to Service Pack 1. Furthermore, the article states that this service pack is a full integrated version, in that it includes not only the original Windows 2000 operating system, but also the Service Pack 2 update. Here’s a portion of the article.

Win2K SP2 Integrated Installation Hits the Street
Microsoft released a new-install only version of Win2K with integrated Service Pack 2 (SP2) files on May 7. The integrated installation contains an SP2 version of all Win2K platforms. This version lets you install new systems running Win2K SP2, but it doesn’t let you update existing Win2K systems to SP2. If you’re eager to start testing, you can download the integrated version from the Microsoft Web site. At 101MB, it’s a large download, and it expands to a robust 120MB. Files in the service pack have a release date of May 4.

Apparently when the writer downloaded the service pack and extracted the files, he or she then read the service pack notes (spnotes.htm), and took them for gospel without testing the service pack installation or checking any further. This Service Pack 2 download does not include the original installation files, and it can be used update existing Windows 2000 installations that already have Service Pack 1 installed.

The Apparent Reason for the Confusion

Being the first with the information is one thing, but it should at least be accurate. Aside from the inaccuracy of the article, earlier service pack downloads were “express” versions that provided only those components that your system requires. Service Pack 2, on the other hand, is a combined service pack, able to update all Windows 2000 versions, including those that have Service Pack 1 already applied. Furthermore, this 101MB service pack was designed to be distributed on a CD-ROM, either as a stand-alone Service Pack update or as part of a Windows 2000 version installation.

Below we have provided a complete listing of the relevant Microsoft Knowledge Base articles for the bugs that have been fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, however should you need to review the actual articles, you will find them here:

Q298193 – List of Bugs Fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (4 of 4)

This collection of bug fixes found in this service pack is consistent with Microsoft’s pledge to refrain from introducing new features in its service packs. As you can see from the list below, Service Pack 2 addresses more than 500 known bugs and issues effecting the original release version of Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 1. Since Service Pack 2 is a superset of Service Pack 1, customers don’t need to first apply Service Pack1 before installing or applying Service Pack 2.

Post Service Pack 2 Fixes

Since the public release of Service Pack 2, there have been an additional 200+ hotfixes released to resolve additional issues in the various version of Windows 2000. You can review a cumulative listing of these hotfixes here.
