Intel Motherboard Reference Notes

The Development Names are, to the best of our knowledge, the initial code names references for the motherboards notes. While this information was, at one time, implanted in the bios files, we have noticed that the Intel has been omitting it from their latest generations of motherboards.

Many of the Intel motherboards will retain essentially the same designation, however we have noted that are variations or options occur such as varying cache sizes between boards, differing connector styles, and the same board can be issued with and without video or audio.

Some motherboards have been through several revisions in order to support the development of faster processors. As an example, the early Zappa’s have a maximum of 90Mhz, the PBA 638995, 641525, 639379 support 100MHz, the -606, -607, – 806, -808 etcetera are 120MHz. The Endeavors, Socket 7, support 150 to 166MHz.

The Rhinestone with the voltage regular and heat sink next to the CPU socket supports the MMX processor. The Tucson motherboards with AA designating numbers 677269-603 and 677270-60x support the 233MHz MMX processor and only the latest revision of the motherboards support MMX.

The Triton boards do not support SIMM parity checking, therefore only 32-bit SIMMs are required.

Most of the Intel Pentium motherboards support three bus speeds, 50MHz (Pentium 75), 60MHz (Pentium 90, 120, 150, 180), and 66MHz (Pentium 100, 133, 166, 200). A boards with a bus speed of 66MHz require 60ns EDO SIMMs.

The Endeavor and Atlantis motherboards support two types of cache sizes, a 256K write back SRAM chip(s) soldered to the motherboard and a plug-in CELP module with 256K or 512K asynchronous or pipelined burst cache.

The Atlantis motherboard has on-board Mach64 SGVA with 1 MByte memory. This can be upgraded to 2 Mbyte, with two 256K x 16 60ns SIMMs. NOTE: Atlantis motherboard has also been called Endeavor II, when supplied without on-board SGVA.

Many of the BIOS revisions and/or their revision levels are not published for many of the motherboards Intel issued, therefore the information noted above may not be entirely.

Early Pentium motherboards support Pentium OverDrive CPU’s with MMX technology (those that include a voltage regulator), with the maximum speed varying dependent upon the maximum speed of the motherboard and whether it is either a Socket 5 or Socket 7.

The LPX and NLX Motherboards are low profile and have expansion sockets on a riser card. Riser cards vary, therefore it is not possible to define the number of PCI and ISA slots for these motherboards. The NLX riser includes a floppy and EIDE as well as other connectors.

You will note that some motherboards have been indicated as being for a server (OEM) application. These are normally only available as a complete server chassis, but have been included here since they are otherwise unique.
