label MS-DOS Command

Type: External (3.0 and later)

Syntax:

LABEL [d:][volume label]

Purpose: Creates or changes or deletes a volume label for a disk.

Discussion

A volume label may consist of up to eleven characters (the same characters that are legal for a file name). If you enter an erroneous volume label, the error message Invalid volume label appears, and the system prompts for a re-entry. If you use this command without entering a volume label, the program displays Input volume label – Up to 11 characters. Press ENTER only to delete label. Enter a volume label, or press the Enter key to delete the current volume label. To display the current label, use either the DIR or VOL command.

Example

To create the label TESTVOL1-A on the diskette in drive B, enter label b:testvol1-a
