The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer tool analyzes your system and reports potentially incompatible hardware devices and software applications. The tool compares the devices and applications on your system against a list of known issues. Please keep in mind that the key words here are "known issues". It is impossible for any tool to be 100% precise, however this tool is the closest we have found. The Disk Image Version allows you to run the Readiness Analyzer on computers that are not on the Internet or that may not be connected to a network. Using two floppy disks, you can download the tool using a computer connected to the Internet. Then run the tool on the machines that you want analyzed before installing Windows 2000.

Special Note: The list of potential issues reported by the Readiness Analyzer tool is based on Microsoft and third-party testing, but is not exhaustive. As an example, Microsoft did not focus on testing any games or entertainment software during the initial test periods. If you are concerned about any of your devices or applications, you are strongly encouraged to contact the hardware or software vendor directly to verify their compatibility before purchasing Windows 2000. The Readiness Analyzer is only the first step in a successful upgrade process. When upgrading to Windows 2000, take all the normal precautions for upgrading an operating system. As of March 2001, Microsoft has added several compatibility patches for a number of games and other forms of third party software.
System Requirements:

The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer can be run on the following operating systems:

  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98
  • Windows NT 3.51
  • Windows NT 4.0
To download the tool, follow these steps: 

  • Before you begin, you will need two clean, freshly formatted 1.44 MB floppy disks.

  • This is the English version only! If you require the analyzer in any other language, you will need to contact Microsoft directly.

  • After downloading, follow the "How to use" procedures below.

  • To download, follow the instructions provided immediately below.

  1. To create the first disk, insert a blank, formatted 1.44 MB floppy into your disk drive.
  2. Click Disk 1 to download setup.exe.
  3. When prompted, choose Save to disk.
  4. Select your a:\ or floppy drive and save the file to this location.

  1. When complete, remove the first disk and insert your second floppy.
  2. Click Disk 2 to download setup.w02.
  3. When prompted, choose Save to disk.
  4. Select your a:\ or floppy drive and save the file to this location to complete the download.

How to use:

  • After you have completed the download, insert your first floppy disk in the computer you want to have analyzed.

  • Locate setup.exe on this disk. Double-click the file to run it.

  • Follow instructions and insert the second disk when prompted.

  • This will install the Readiness Analyzer to the computer's hard drive.

  • You can access it by clicking the Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer shortcut on the desktop or by selecting the item in the Start Menu.

  • The Readiness Analyzer will display a list of the hardware and software that may present Windows 2000 compatibility issues. You can save or print this report for your reference.

  • Please note that compatibility reports generated by the Readiness Analyzer tool may vary slightly from reports generated by the Windows 2000 setup program.

Windows 95/Windows 98 Users:

  • If you have anti-virus software installed, you will see a message directing you to uninstall the anti-virus software and quit Setup. Click No to proceed. Do not uninstall your anti-virus software.

  • The Readiness Analyzer will not operate on dual-boot machines running Windows 95 or Windows 98 in tandem with Windows NT.

How to Uninstall the Windows 2000 Readiness Tool

You can uninstall the Readiness Analyzer using Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.
