Windows Keyboard Shortcuts &
Shortcuts for the Microsoft Windows Keyboard

Here's some helpful tips on the shortcut keys available to you.

Did you know that:

• Touching the Ctrl key while dragging with the mouse copies a file of any type.
• Holding the Ctrl + Shift keys down while dragging with the mouse creates a shortcut.
• Holding the Shift down and clicking Close in File menu closes a folder and all parent folders.
• Touching the Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + Shift + Tab enables you to cycle through tabbed areas in a dialog box.
• Holding the Shift key down while inserting a CD bypasses autorun.
• Shift + F1 - Context help (What's this?).
• Shift + F10 - Displays pop-up menu.
• Spacebar -  Causes the item you are on to be selected. (same as one left-click).
• Esc - cancel.
• Backspace - go to parent folder.
• Touching the Print Screen key will cause the entire screen to be saved to clipboard.
• Touching the Ctrl + Esc acts the same as the Start button, and touching ESC closes it.
• F1 - Opens the Windows Help window.
• F2 - Enables the Rename function.
• F3 - Enables the Windows Find function.
• F4 - In Windows Explorer displays a combo box.
• F5 - Causes a window refresh.
• Right Mouse Click - Display context menu of selected menu

Using the Ctrl key in combination with another key:

• Ctrl + A - Select All
• Ctrl + C - Copy
• Ctrl + O - Open
• Ctrl + P - Print
• Ctrl + S - Save
• Ctrl + V - Paste
• Ctrl + X - Cut (Undo)
• Ctrl + Z - Undo

Using the Alt key in combination with another key:

• Touching just the Alt will either activate or deactivate the menu bar mode.
• Touching the Alt + Tab will display next primary window or last used window.
• Touching the Alt + Spacebar will display a pop-up menu for the current window.
• Touching the Alt + Enter will display properties.
• Touching the Alt + F4 will close the active window, game, etc.
• Touching the Alt + F6 will enable you to switch to next window within an application.
• Touching the Alt + Print Screen will cause the current window to be saved to the Clipboard.

Windows Explorer, including Explorer tree shortcuts:

• F6 - In Windows Explorer, shifts focus between panes (also Tab)
• Shift + Del - Deletes a file or folder without putting either into the Recycle Bin.
• Alt + a double-click - Displays Properties.
• Ctrl + a right-click - Displays an alternative menu.
• Shift + double-click - Explore if available.
• Ctrl + G - in Windows Explorer selects the GoTo command.
• "*" on numeric keypad expands everything under selection.
• "+" on numeric expands a selection.
• "-" on numeric keypad collapses a selection.
• Right arrow will expand a selection if not already expanded or go to the first child entry.
• Alt + right arrow moves you forward to the next view.
• Left arrow collapses a view if not, otherwise moves to a parent view.
• Alt + left arrow moves you backward to previous view.
• Alt + Spacebar will display the current window system menu.
• Shift + Close will cause a folder to close along with all parents.
• Shift + F10 - will display items context menu.

Shortcuts for use in Internet Explorer:

• Tab + Enter activates a selected link.
• Tab - Move forward through page items.
• Shift + F10 - Opens a shortcut menu for a link (Also opens shortcut menu in most programs).
• Ctrl + A - Select all items on current page.
• Ctrl + D - Add to list of Favorites.
• Ctrl + E - Open Search Bar.
• Ctrl + F - Find on the current page.
• Ctrl + H - Open History Bar.
• Ctrl + I - Open Favorites Bar.
• Ctrl + N - To open a new window.
• Ctrl + O (not zero) - To go to a new location.
• Ctrl + P - To print a page or active an frame.
• Ctrl + S - To save the current page.
• Ctrl + W - Close Current Browser Window.
• Alt + Right Arrow - To go to next page.
• Alt + Left Arrow - To go to previous page.
• Ctrl + Tab - To move forward between frames.
• Shift + Ctrl + Tab - To move backward between frames.
• Home - To move to the beginning of document.
• End - To move to the end of document.
• F4 - Display list of URL's in Address Bar
• F5 - To refresh the page.
• F6 - Change Address Bar and Page Focus.
• F11 - Toggle full-screen view.
• Up Arrow - To scroll up.
• Down Arrow - To scroll down.
• Page Up - To paginate upward.
• Page Down - To paginate downward.
• Esc - To stop a download in progress.
• Ctrl + Left or Right Arrow - To move in the Address bar, move to URL, break or separate characters. 
• Ctrl + End - In the Address bar to go to the end of an auto-completed URL.
• Ctrl + Enter - Add "www." and ".com" to word to form a URL in the Address Bar.
• Shift + Mouse Click - Open Link in New Window.
• Backspace - Go to Previous Page.
• Home - Move to the beginning of the open document.

Key Combinations for Open and Save Dialog boxes:

• Esc - To cancel current task.
• Alt + Underline (underscore key to the left of the + key) Operates the same as clicking that command. 
• Enter - Operates the same at clicking the selected button.
• Tab - Moves you forward through an option.
• Shift + Tab - Moves you backwards through options.
• Ctrl + Tab - Moves you forward through tabs.
• Shift + Ctrl + Tab - Moves you backwards through tabs.
• Spacebar - Causes a selected button to act as though you had clicked it; select/clear check box; select radio button option, etc.
• F4 - Displays Look in or Save in within Open or Save As dialog box.

Keyboard-only commands:

• Alt + Esc - Move to next window.
• Alt + Space - Opens a pop-up window for in-view window if available.
• Alt + Enter - Open properties if available.
• Alt + Tab - Switches to last used window.
• F10 - Moves you to menu mode.
• Shift + F10 - Causes selected menu to open or close.

Accessibility Options:

• Tapping the Shift key 5 times - Toggles Sticky Keys.
• Hold right Shift for 8 seconds - Toggles Filter Keys.
• Hold Num Lock for 5 seconds - Toggles Toggle Keys.
• Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock - Toggles Mouse Keys.
• Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen - Toggles High Contrast mode.

Special Key Strokes for the Microsoft Windows keyboard:

• Windows Logo Key - Start menu when released.
  
  
• Hold the Windows Key down for these:
  • Windows Key + F1 - Open Windows Help.
  • Windows Key + Tab - Cycle through taskbar buttons.
  • Windows Key + D To jump to the desktop (minimize all open windows)
  • Windows Key + E - Opens Windows Explorer.
  • Windows Key + F - Opens Find, Files or Folders.
  • Windows Key + I - Launch Mouse Properties.
  • Windows Key + L To log off Windows.
  • Windows Key + M - Minimize all windows.
  • Windows Key + R - Open the Run dialog box.
  • Windows Key + Ctrl + F - Opens find Computer.
  • Windows Key + Break Key - Open System Properties dialog box.
  
  
• Shift + Windows Key + M - Undo minimize all. (Maximize)
• Windows Key + F, then F4, then Down Arrow, then Enter - Use previous search strings.
• To remove a device in Device Manager:
  Windows Key + Pause/Break, then Right Arrow once, the Tab twice, then Down Arrow to highlight the main menu, then Right Arrow to open the submenu, then Down Arrow to highlight the controller, then Tab three times, then touch Enter twice.

If your system locks up:

Press F5 twice,

Alt + F4 - To end task on a specific program that is running,
